Backcountry skiing or even off-piste skiing is skiing in a sparsely inhabited rural region across ungroomed & overlooked slopes (i personally.e. marked pistes are not present). Fixed mechanical means of ascent (chairlifts, cable cars etc.) are as well typically non present.
